London’s Rainbow Food

The rainbow food trend has been around for quite a few years and we can now feed both our eyes and stomachs with wonders such as rainbow pancakes, waffles, sushi, coffee, cheesecakes and ice cream. When you look at the rainbow food assortment in cities such as New York and Tokyo, London seems to be well behind these international food bloggers. Although UK’s most awesome city is yet to have Rainbow Unicorn Bark and cookies, we still have a couple of remarkable colourful treats that’ll make every rainbow enthusiast drool. In order to make our Pride month even more colourful, we decided to check them out for you.

It all began around five years ago with well-known Hummingbird’ Bakery Rainbow Cake. The Rainbow cake being one of Hummingbird’s all time bestseller prompted the bakery to work on its gluten free and vegan version. Having six colourful layers of vanilla sponge interlaid and covered in buttercream frosting (vanilla or chocolate), the original Rainbow Cake can be found decorated with deliciously motley sprinkles. The pleasure starts at £30.95, depending on the size of the cake.

THE HUMMINGBIRD BAKERY RAINBOW CAKE

Following the success of Hummingbird' Bakery exhibiting rainbow goodness on their shelves, another London shop followed suit. Over a hundred years old Rinkoff’s bakery, Whitechapel, made an equally delicious colourful cake (£3.95 per slice). Both cakes having exterior similarities, however differ with their rather subtle taste. We can’t simply choose which cake tastes better. Both are bound to satisfy even the most demanding foodie’s palate.

Rinkoff’s colourful cake isn’t the only rainbow product you can get at their shop. A few months later the bakery began to make delightfully colourful, twisted rainbow bagels. Despite their sweet look, Rinkoff’s signature bagels are made of the same dough that’s also being used to make other bagels. This means you can have them with ham and cheese or oreo cream cheese spread (yum!) and they’ll always taste great!

Another London venue where you can find a surprising rainbow version of a common baked good is Hotel Cafe Royal. Their rainbow croissants (£4 each) that took Londoners Instagrams by storm last year returned for this years Pride and will be available at Papillon until July 15th. Each eye-catching pastry is filled with lime curd and decorated with speckled white chocolate.

Since Maxwells’ famous unicorn freakshake is painfully unavailable since October, we’ll now focus on the last rainbow item on our list: a rainbow toastie.

Yes, you got it right: the talented minds standing behind Grill My Cheese’s food menu found a way to turn melted cheese into a rainbow. You don’t need a sweet tooth to add a little colour to your meal! The rainbow toastie (£3.60) contains four different types of cheese and is the only item on our list that doesn’t contain food colouring - the vibrant colours you see below come from lavender, basil and tomato.

GRILL MY CHEESE'S RAINBOW TOASTIE

This surprising combination of cheese and rainbow is, unfortunately, the last motley treat we managed to track down in London so far. The number might not be very impressive, but we can guarantee that even one bite of one of these colourful treats is enough to keep the most fussy foodie happy. While in search of London’s other delicious signature goods, we solemnly promise to look out for colours. Rainbow swear we gonna keep you posted!
