Montana Brown on Mental Health Issues and Struggling to 'Adjust' After Reality TV

Islander, Montana Brown has become a celebrity public figure thanks to Love Island. Like many others, Brown's social media following has grown tremendously ever since she made her name on reality TV.

There is no doubt that benefits come with fame from endorsements, sponsorships to an increase of opportunities. Although fame has its upsides, it also has its downsides.

Since becoming a reality star, Brown has stated that this had caused her to become overwhelmed which sparked her anxiety and depression. Moreover, she continuously felt judged as people online would make hurtful comments about her appearance (mostly her eyes), which affected her so much causing her to become fixated on having surgery. However, by focusing on inner work over the last 4 years, Brown has managed to cope with her mental health issues.

In addition to online trolling, the passing of Love Island's co-star Mike Thalatissis, a good friend of Brown’s who committed suicide at the age of 26 in 2019 had also added to her mental health issues.

A tragedy that put Brown in a deep spiral of depression as she wondered whether she could have saved him. Brown states that,

"I felt so guilty. He had messaged me a couple of days before and I had not responded, thinking I would ring him at the weekend.

I kept thinking what if I could have

saved him?”

Brown had isolated herself from friends and family and even lost motivation to even go outside and eat.

It is clear that social media has not been the most useful technology for Brown and anyone going through mental health issues especially when it comes to someone of celebrity status and fame.

Clearly, there is a lesson to be learnt from this - that there is a price that comes with fame. At times, fame can be very toxic and detrimental to one's mental wellbeing. The solution could be having a social media detox from time to time by stepping away from social media especially if you are mentally vulnerable.
